Give Estates a Big Lift by Leveraging Split Gifts

In June 2015, InsuranceNewsNet Magazine featured Russell Towers’ article “Give Estates a Big Lift by Leveraging Split Gifts.” In this article, Towers discusses the advantages of leveraging split gifts, which allows a married couple to increase their total tax gift annual exclusions by combining their individual allowances. Split gifts also have other advantages from an estate tax point of view, such as, reducing the gross estate, future appreciation is not included in the gross estate, and the use of an ILIT as a way to leverage gifts made to heirs which will provide liquidity at the estate owner’s death.
